Slumber & Scones - Behind the Scenes

Developing the Slumber & Scones name

When I first got the idea to start a new blog, I figured I’d probably name it after myself. I have a pretty solid collection of abandoned blogs full of Kait puns:
  • Communikait, a blog about writing
  • Edukait, a blog about trying to get into grad school
  • Mastikait, a concept for a youtube cooking show I never even started
  • Intoxikait, a collection of cocktail ideas
Needless to say, they all failed, so I thought symbolically going in a different direction namewise might help me with my mindset. I’d like this blog to work because I want it to pan out into a real bed and breakfast, and that starts with the name.
The other concept I played around with was naming the blog similar to how an actual b&b would be named. I thought of some I’ve visited, and they seemed to fit into a few categories:
  • The Nature-word Noun
  • The Adjective Synonym-for-house
  • Location Noun
These were all pretty generic. I wanted the name to clearly make me think bed and breakfast right away, without too much thinking. So I narrowed down my options to a simple formula: Word-relating-to-bed & Word-relating-to-breakfast.
I made a list of all the words I could think of for each: chaise, cozy, dreams, lullabies, sleep, springs, threadcount & bacon, cinnamon, omelette, pancakes, pastry, yogurt. Then I combined some into alliterative pairs, and narrowed it down to six I liked:
  • Covers & Croissants
  • Pillows & Popovers
  • Quilts & Quiche
  • Dust Ruffles & Doughnuts
  • Blankets & Biscuits
And of course, Slumber and Scones. I eliminated the D’s and Q’s pretty quick, and then did a poll in a Facebook group for the four others. I’ll admit, it almost went the way of Pillows and Popovers, but too many respondents said they had never even heard of a popover! What a shame (I’ll have to post a recipe once I get S&S launched!).
So Slumber and Scones was born. I think it does the job.
